Set Yourself Up for Success: Tips for Fulfilling Your New Year's Resolutions

Make 2023 the year you achieve your goals with practical strategies that set you up to succeed.

As the new year approaches, many of us start thinking about the positive changes we want to make in our life.

New Year's resolutions can be a great way to motivate us to do this, but it’s important to pause and ask - Am I just going through the motions here? What can I do to set myself up to succeed with the goals I set? Here are some tips that might help with this: 

Strategy #1: Pause and Reflect. 

What are your values? Before you start making a list of goals, take some time to really think about what is most important to you.

Consider not just your current challenges, but also your values. This alignment will help you stay motivated and committed while also focusing your energy on areas that will have the biggest impact on your life. After all, why does achieving a goal matter, if it doesn’t touch an aspect of our life we actually care about?

This exercise can also be a great way to differentiate between what you actually want, and what you feel you should want based on external factors. 

Strategy #2: Set Intentions, rather than Resolutions.  

Once you’ve identified your values, set intentions that are aligned with them. For example, if Health is a value for you, you may set an intention like “Discover my favorite way to move 3-4 hours per week.” You can see that this is more flexible and open-ended (and therefore more inviting) than a resolution such as “Run 3 times a week.”

While resolutions are specific goals that you want to achieve, intentions are more like guiding principles that you want to focus on. This can make them more adaptable and easier to incorporate into your daily life. 

Strategy #3: Get support. 

We are social beings and are not meant to do any of this alone. It's more feasible to achieve your goals when you have support from others.

Consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member whom you can share your progress, celebrations and to help keep you motivated and accountable. Or, perhaps join a group or club that shares your goals.

While ringing in a new year is always a good reason to reassess our goals, they are not just for December! Once you set your intentions, make time and space to revisit, reflect and adjust.

And most importantly, don't forget to celebrate your achievements along the way. This will help you stay motivated and keep you on track to achieve your ultimate goals.
